🔴 Final Statement of the Workshop “The Situation of Palestinian Detainees after October 7th”
The workshop, organized by the Palestine International Friends Alliance (PIFA) in Ramallah concluded on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, under the title “The Situation of Palestinian Detainees after October 7th.” The workshop, which saw significant international and Palestinian participation, focused on discussing the tragic conditions, human rights violations, and war crimes imposed on Palestinian detainees in Israeli occupation prisons.
PIFA emphasized at the end of the workshop that this harsh situation necessitates immediate and serious action from all of us to advance the cause of the detainees and achieve justice and freedom for them. The international community was urged to intervene urgently to stop these repressive campaigns and ensure the legitimate rights of Palestinians under international law.
A set of general and specialized recommendations were agreed upon, the most important of which are:
1. Adopting a clear vision and strategy at the international and human rights levels to confront the horrific and shocking reality imposed on detainees in Israeli occupation prisons.
2. Holding a follow-up meeting on strategies one week from today.
3. The Bar Association’s approval to adopt a volunteer program for lawyers for visits and legal follow-up.
4. Organizing a conference in Europe at the beginning of October.
5. Continuing to present live testimonies of detainees and lawyers to expose violations and crimes against detainees during their arrest and imprisonment.
6. Intensifying media campaigns about the violations and crimes against detainees and informing the international community about them.
7. Activating a program for popular marches including refugee areas, the diaspora, and Arab and international arenas.
8. Forming an international committee to protect detainees with membership from parliament members, international, human rights, and legal figures to be announced at the upcoming conference.
The workshop emphasized the importance of holding the occupation accountable in international human rights forums, isolating it, and activating international popular movements to support detainees in occupation prisons. The workshop also called for the formation of an international committee to protect detainees and international supporters, and to support their right to freedom through a series of clear international measures, including referring individual cases to international courts.
PIFA affirms that these recommendations come within the framework of ongoing efforts to enhance the rights of Palestinian detainees and ensure their freedom. This will be reflected in concrete steps soon to effectively and promptly achieve these recommendations.
