Ramallah, Palestine - Palestinian female political prisoner Shaden Qous has been released under certain conditions from the occupation’s Damon central prison today, after her father unexpectedly passed away in a tragic accident. The fact that the occupation released Shaden, a university student, is further proof that she was being held arbitrarily and that she could have been afforded the chance to be with her father before he passed away, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) has said. Shaden had been held for over a month and had not been charged with any kind of offense under Israel’s oppressive military court system, which is run by occupation soldiers.

With the release of Shaden, 15 female political detainees remain in the occupation’s central prisons, with many others from Gaza whose identities are withheld by the occupation.

Shaden’s release is the exception, not the rule. The Israeli occupation historically never allowed a Palestinian detainee to be released temporarily on compassionate grounds to attend a family member’s funeral, as a matter of policy. Since the genocide in Gaza, dozens of Palestinian detainees - particularly those from Gaza - lost their family members in Israel’s onslaught, and were forbidden from seeing them for the last time. Not only that, some detainees only found out about the murder of their loved ones months later or even after their release.
