Palestinian Prisoner’s Society: Israeli Occupation Intends to Kill Imprisoned Political Leader Marwan Barghouti

August 15, 2025

Ramallah, occupied Palestine - The director of the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, Abdullah al-Zighari, is warning that the threats made by the fascist Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir against national leader Marwan Barghouti - who was filmed in his cell on Thursday evening - constitute a clear declaration of the occupation's intentions to kill him and assassinate the other political leaders languishing in its prisons. This comes amidst unprecedented crimes against prisoners since the start of the genocide in Gaza.

Al-Zighari noted that Ben-Gvir's threats increase serious fears for the fate of Barghouti, who has been in solitary confinement since the start of the genocide and is currently being held in “Rimon” Prison, along with dozens of other leaders of the prisoner movement. They face harsh and tragic conditions, including starvation, denial of medical treatment, and systematic assaults, including severe beatings during repression operations carried out by heavily armed special units.

Al-Zighari explained that Barghouti and dozens of other leaders were subjected to repeated assaults, resulting in varying degrees of injuries. He added that the prison administration continues to obstruct their lawyers’ visits and frequently moves them between prisons, which is accompanied by brutal assaults.

The PPS director holds Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for Barghouti's life and safety, reiterating his calls for the international community to restore its effective role in confronting the genocide, halting the systematic crimes against prisoners, and ending the ongoing state of complicity and impotence in the face of the occupation's policies.

It is worth noting that prisoner organizations had previously warned of the escalating crimes against political leaders behind bars and of repeated attempts to murder them.
