🔴 Journalist Facing Medical Issues Amid Horrible Detention Conditions

October 18, 2026

Ramallah, occupied Palestine – The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society said on Sunday that Palestinian journalist and female prisoner Bushra al-Taweel, 33, is facing abuse and maltreatment at the hands of the Israeli occupation’s prison system and its employees. Al-Taweel continues to be held in solitary confinement for approximately 50 consecutive days, during which Israeli prison forces have repeatedly raided her cell, beaten her and sprayed pepper gas into her cell, as well as constant verbal abuse. She is also under 24/7 camera surveillance.

Regarding her health, al-Taweel is suffering from dryness of the eyes, skin, and hands, as well as numbness in her hands caused by prolonged shackling of her hands . It is worth noting that she was suffering from scabies before being transferred to solitary confinement, amid harsh detention conditions and deprivation of basic necessities.

Her living conditions are extremely difficult. There is insufficient food, and she is forced to drink unsanitary tap water. She also said she has no clothes available and is unable to wash her clothing. Furthermore, the mattress she sleeps on is of poor quality and extremely dirty, to the point that she feels as though she is sleeping on the floor. Her blanket is also of poor quality.

In a related development, al-Taweel said she was transferred from Damon Prison to the solitary confinement section at Ramla Prison without being informed of the reasons for the transfer. She added that on October 4, 2026, she was made to sign documents stating that she would be transferred to Damon Prison. However, she was surprised to find herself transferred to solitary confinement at Ohalie Oz Prison in Beer Sabe’, where she remains detained to this day.

The Israeli occupation authorities have also renewed the administrative detention order against al-Taweel for an additional four months, as part of the continued targeting and persecution of her.

The PPS stressed that what al-Taweel is experiencing is part of an escalation in the systematic targeting of Palestinian women prisoners through administrative detention, solitary confinement, mistreatment, and the denial of their basic rights, amid detention conditions that undermine their dignity and threaten their physical and psychological well-being.

The PPS calls on international human rights organisations, particularly the International Committee of the Red Cross, to intervene urgently to investigate al-Taweel’s detention conditions, work to end her isolation, ensure her protection and access to the necessary medical care, secure her release, and monitor violations committed against her and other Palestinian women held in Israeli occupation prisons.
